About Me

Hi, I'm Emma, and welcome to my blog!

I started writing this blog as a way of documenting my recovery from disordered eating, so that I could get my thoughts down and out of my head, and, if anyone in similar circumstances was reading, to help them realise they weren't alone in all of the horrible feelings. Hopefully I will show that recovery is worth those inevitable challenging days!

I aim to eat a vegetarian diet and aim for whole, natural, unprocessed foods. A year or so ago I started reading a lot of healthy eating blogs and books, and it helped alter how I looked at food: it can be nutritious rather than the enemy! Realising how many nutrients I was depriving myself of by not eating enough, and then bingeing on sugary, processed foods helped me realise I needed to change. However, my disordered eating continued and I recently became so anaemic and B12 deficient that my doctor signed me off work  I also have a mildly fatty liver which I believe to be down to my bingeing. Now I'm seeking professional help so that I can get rid of the issues preventing me from living my life to the fullest! For more information about my history of disordered reading, take a look at this post.

I'm a keen runner (of the so-slow-I-may-aswell-be-walking variety!). Yes, I do it because I know we should exercise, but I also do it for so much more: I'm definitely addicted to the runner's high, and it's one of the best endorphin boosters I know! Whilst I may be a slow runner who gets overtaken by everyone I dont mind, I've focused on distance, and in my time I've reached half marathon distances. and maybe one day I'll even make a marathon.

I hope to show from this blog that not only can eating disorders be overcome (I desperately hope that they can) but that healthy eating doesn't have to be bland and boring, but full of colour, flavour, and most importantly...dessert. By eating a natural diet, exercising, and leading a healthy lifestyle, we should be able to get our bodies running exactly how they're meant to, and give the one body we have for our lifetime all the experiences it deserves.

My life outside of blogging
I'm 25 years old and moved down to London from near Manchester a year and a half ago. I graduated from the University of St Andrews with a Psychology degree in 2011, and I miss that Scottish town and the amazing people there all the time! I work as a consultant helping to improve and support public sector organisations, which takes me to many corners of the UK during the week. Whilst this job can be incredibly rewarding, and it's great to see the benefits you bring to your clients, my passion will always be in understanding how our diet and environment can be tailored to help us feel the happiest and fittest, and live live to the full.

My philosophy
The quality of our diet is so essential to both our physical and mental wellbeing that it needs to be one of our top priorities. Understanding what our bodies need enables us to feel our best and experience all the opportunities life has to give! I believe in eating a diet as full of whole, unprocessed foods as possible, and making use of the unbeleivable Plant Power for all the natural goodness they provide (like fibre, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals). I'm a strong believer that with some plant power (!) and some endorphin-inducing exercise (and a good dose of self-esteem)  we can help ourselves become the best version of us!
