Wow, today has been loooong.
My brain is pretty mushed so I'll keep this brief!
Was happy with my eats, until I walked the 2 miles back to the hotel (am staying in a different hotel this week). I was hot, and tired, and there were biscuits in my hotel room. And they were in my mouth before I knew what was happening. It probably would have been avoided if I'd eaten more during the day so didn't have a massive energy crash. Overall I ended up a bit heavy on the fat, due to the nuts (not too bothered as healthy fats) and the biscuits (more bothered):
Fats: 49%, Carbs 41%, Protein 10%
Gratitude
- These were on the desk that I was working at today. I hope they help the person sat there as much as they touched me today:
- I'm finally getting closer to getting a new phone. I'm trying to negotiate a deal that's cheaper than the one I'm on, but I really miss having a decent phone that takes decent pictures and has actual apps! Fingers crossed not too long now :)
- Leaving my coat at home. Felt so wrong but so good!
How was the start to your week? What made you grateful today?
Hope you all have lovely evenings :)

Monday motivation #2
Happy Monday lovelies!
This week isn't seeming too daunting for me, as I'm off work on Wednesday to go to the Chelsea Flower Show - SO EXCITED! It breaks the work week up nicely, so I can't complain.
Still, we can always use a bit of motivation to get us going.
This song came on the radio the other day and it massively cheered me up. Summery, positive and annoyingly catchy, what more could you want?!
This is great. Sometimes we just need to remember we don't have to control everything:
Last week I made my own almond milk, using Deliciously Ella's recipe, and I loved it! It's so satisfying to make something yourself, hardly took any time at all (but you do need to soak the almonds the night before), and really motivated me to make more things myself :) This recipe from My Whole Food Life looks like it will be a bit more creamy if you like it that way.
Hope that helps get your week off on the right foot! Hope you all have lovely Mondays!

Weekend round-up: London life
*Weather chat warning*
I LOVE THIS WEATHER!!!!
It makes such a difference to everything!
I've really enjoyed my weekend, though as usual it's gone too quickly.
My Saturday started off with a fab run along the Thames. I did a total of 5.88 miles, running for the first 3 and a bit miles, then doing walking-running intervals for the rest. I got out early enough that even though it was sunny it wasn't too warm, and it just felt lovely :)
After that I braved central London to try and finish off my garden party shopping. I caught the train to Waterloo station and then planned on having a leisurely walk up to Oxford Street.
It would have been leisurely, except it was a bazillion degrees...and I got lost. I don't even know how that happened! I've walked there before, and had a map, and then all of a sudden I had no idea where I was! Where I happened to be was "a long way in the wrong direction". By the time I got to Oxford Street, realised I was at the wrong end of the street for the shop I needed, and walked to the right end I was already pretty shattered! Shopping turns out to be a good workout!
I successfully got the Monsoon dress I tried on last weekend.
And after trying on every white jacket on Oxford Street I found one that looked ok from Zara so went with that (by that point I was very much done with shopping!). Just a hat and shoes to get now...
Stopped off at Pret for some lunch, finding the air con vent and sitting directly underneath it in an effort to cool down! That along with my superfood salad really sorted me out :)
There was one final stop at Whole Foods for some coconut water before I chilled out in Leicester Square waiting for my boyfriend to arrive (I'm hoping I got some serious girlfriend brownie points for not dragging him round with me!). After a quick Costa pitstop we went to go and see The Wind Rises at the cinema, which even I (who doesn't mind, but doesn't love, anime films) thought was pretty good.
Today has been spent in a much more leisurely fashion (which my legs have very much thanked me for!). I had a late get up, and then spent time mooching around Richmond, where we grabbed some lunch at Zizzi's (I had the Super Zucca salad) and had another Costa trip.
TEAPOT FACE!
I have to say the best thing I've eaten all week was this:
Minus the cat. Chocolate CoYo coconut yoghurt, frozen blackberries, and tahini-dipped medjool date. I've tried coconut yoghurt before and not been all that fussed, but this was amazing!
I've struggled a bit with my eating/thoughts this weekend. Yesterday I was so impressed myself because I purposefully ate loads knowing I'd been on a longer run and had been on my feet all day. And it was all really good, nutritious food, bar a quesadilla kit for dinner with my bf which had quite a lot of additives in (and I really noticed my tummy grumbling about afterwards!). But I was feeling incredibly low about my body image yesterday in particular, comparing myself to literally every other person who walked past, and being super aware of every millimetre of fat on my body. I had to constantly keep reminding myself that the important thing in life is to be healthy, and that every body's healthy looks different. Plus, it's that time of the month, and we all know what that does to our mindset! So, let's focus on ourselves, forget about everyone else's body, and enjoy life!
One final thing: my Ruled by the Scales post got a link on Laura's amazing Keeping Healthy Getting Stylish blog! I love the positive messages that Laura spreads through her blog and community work, so this meant such a lot - thanks Laura :)
What were the highlights of your weekend?
Have lovely evenings!

Meals and gratitude #5
It's the weekend, it's so warm it feels like stepping into a warm bath when you go outside, and I'm sat in a coffee shop with a peppermint tea. Thank you life.
I've really had to gain some self control with my eating today. I was feeling stuffed, and yet was still eating. This is often a problem when I work from home as I procrastinate eat (and obviously then feel guilty and horrific, even though the calories may actually still not be as many as I need). However I did at least recognise how I was feeling, what I was doing, and that this was stupid - and I did stop. Good right? Plus my breakfast was pretty balanced, as was my lunch (I'm desperately trying to use up my gluten free pasta and pesto as they're both getting near their use by date, so expect a lot of this meal!).
I even made my own almond milk for breakfast! It's the first time I've ever done this and it was actually pretty easy. I didn't strain it properly as I didn't have the proper jam straining cloth, but you couldn't notice in the smoothie. It was nice to know I wasn't having any of the questionable ingredients that you can sometimes find in the cheaper shop brands.
The recipe was adapted from Deliciously Ella's super easy recipe, the only difference being I used a small squirt of agave syrup rather than the dates as that was all I had in my cupboard. Tasted delicious though!
Wasn't hungry for dinner after all the silly snacking. Those popchips are my fave though! Picked them up on a trip to Whole Foods.
Sorry that's so difficult to read! I'm happy that I didn't go over on anything important, keeping all the different categories quite well balanced.
That coconut oil and cocoa powder was used to make these brownies/chocolates (texture depends on how long you freeze them for). They're so good!
Gratitude
Things I'm grateful for today:
- such a good run this morning. The weather was gorgeous, and I ran that partiular route the fastest ever, even running at a pace of 9:23 min/mile at one point. Yes, it was tough, but it felt good!
- clean eating, making things such as the almond milk and chocolates myself. I felt so different eating them to something I had bought - I felt less guilty and unsure eating them. Plus it was so much cheaper and you can make as much or as little as you need, saving waste (important when I'm hardly at home and opening a large bottle of almond milk is just not practical!)
- Whole Foods. I realise that's ridiculous to feel thankful for a grocery store, and a lot of the stuff in there isn't always "clean", but I find it an inspiring place to be. It makes me excited to eat, and that's such an important thing for me to feel
- Getting an introductory phone call booked in with a company that provides private therapy for eating issues, from obesity to eating disorders. I'll let you know how it goes next Wednesday.
- Sitting in coffee shops, people watching and blog writing. There's something therapeutic about it :)
Have you ever made your own almond milk or chocolate? What made you grateful today?
Have lovely weekends! Fingers crossed this weather holds out!

Meals and gratitude #4
Today has been a stressful day of eating!
I was at an away day today where lunch was provided and there wasn't a piece of fruit in sight. I hated having no control, and cheese sandwiches being the only vegetarian option. None of those are actually bad things: cheese is a good source of protein, and I chose a wholemeal bun, but it was the fact that it was being forced upon me, and that made me panicky.
Everyone went for dinner after the away day, but I avoided it - I just couldn't face another enforced eating situation. Unfortunately it meant I missed out on a really good social situation as a result. What I did record for dinner was the start of a massive urge to binge. I don't know what caused it (maybe the nutrient lacking lunch made me unsatisfied?) but I haven't had the urge to binge in that way before. But, the key thing is, I stopped it. I didn't give in to my urges.
Still, a pretty dire day in terms of nutrition!
Today was a rest day for exercise, but I did manage 7,000 steps which I was impressed with bearing in mind I was sat down for the majority of the day.
Gratitude
Despite my eating, I had many things to be grateful for today:
- The weather (surprise surprise - but it was another beaut!)
- Having a peppermint tea at Pret this morning whilst I did some work before the away day. Working in a coffee shop never really seems like working!
- Getting to see some colleagues I hadn't seen in ages
- Having a lovely evening chatting with my flatmate. She's a star!

Thursday thoughts: ruled by the scales
Morning everyone!
This week I wanted to discuss how the weighing scales can rule our lives.
![]() |
| Source |
I think everyone can relate to this, eating disorder or no
eating disorder. Most people have their own rituals for stepping on their
scales, and I imagine few people can say their mood has never been affected by
the number they see pop up.
For me, my scales ritual has always been that it must be done
first thing in the morning, no clothes, preferably before I’ve done any
exercise (I don’t want any fake weight loss from sweating!). This used to happen
every day, and then often in the evening too, and even at random points in the
day (you know, just in case I’d put on or lost another stone in the last half
an hour…). I was obsessed with the scales.
When I started bingeing, I became fearful of stepping
on the scales. The thought of seeing how I’d failed, how I’d acted in such a “disgusting”
way, how large and horrible I was, pictured in scientific numbers, made me
panic. But eventually my obsession would win over, I’d step on the scales, and
then feel horrific the rest of the day.
Often, my obsession with the numbers on the scale was quite
removed from my actual body. Yes, I had massive body hang-ups and desperately wanted
to be smaller, but the scales were almost a separate numbers game rather than being associated with my looks. In my head,
lower numbers meant better self-control, better looking, better determination…generally
a better person. I wanted to get to a lower and lower number, and to put on
weight was a massive failure. I used to obsess over the estimated weights of
celebs you’d see in the magazines so I could compare myself to them (although I
doubt they’re even vaguely accurate!). Yet I would never tell anyone my weight:
it was a source of internal pride, not something I wanted to disclose to the
world.
And to add to the numbers we see on the scale, there are all the additional statistics,
such as BMI, to become obsessed with and to set yourself expectations for.
So why do we do this? I know I don’t remember the first day I
stood on a scale, but I do remember in a PE class where we were allowed in the
gym, and the steps machine asked me to put in my weight to help estimate the
number of calories I was burning. I had no idea what weight I was, so I copied
someone else’s, and wondered whether I should know what my weight was (and if I
should be obsessing over it as much as the other girls). However I have no idea
when I started weighing myself regularly.
Messages get ingrained in our heads from an early age. And it’s
not only “you should know how much you weigh”, or “you should be this weight” - I feel it’s starting to become that the
only state we should be in is one where we’re losing weight. I often think there's this perception that
even if you’re slim, you still have to be seen as trying to lose weight, to keep
going and going. And what’s the easiest way of us measuring where we are? The scales
of course!
But scales are not even accurate! Many different things can affect the number on the scale, other than our weight, such as hormones, the amount of water our bodies hold on to etc. (this article from Greatist
is a brilliant demonstration of this). And check this out:
![]() |
| Source |
That muscle and fat WEIGH THE SAME AMOUNT. Muscle is much
denser than fat, and therefore if you have the same volume of muscle and fat in
front of you, the muscle will weigh significantly more than the fat. So actually,
if you start working out, gaining muscle, you could lose body mass but stay the
same weight. And if you’re not aware of this fat v muscle weight issue, you’re
going to get frustrated that your workouts don’t seem to be working. You may
panic, you may train harder, eat less, all to budge that number on the scale. And
most likely you will be training TOO MUCH and eating NOT ENOUGH. All of this
doing damage to your body. So, the scale is not some wonder machine. As humans
who learn maths and science we see numbers as factual and accurate, something we
can use to make comparisons – and this is not the case with scales.
Another example,
these women all weigh 154lbs, yet look how different their bodies are, beautiful each in different ways:

The scales do not
tell us everything.
We all need to step back and start actually thinking about
what the numbers mean. We need to know that the scales can fluctuate around
7lbs without us gaining or losing any real weight.
We need to ask ourselves SO
WHAT? So what if the number on the scale goes up a couple of pounds? The real thing we
should be measuring ourselves on is our health. Are we eating a diet that
supports our body? Are we eating enough to give us all the nutrients we need? Are we moving our bodies enough? Are we hydrating with water? Are we giving our brains a break from all the stupid mental stresses we put on ourselves, including stressing about our body imge?
So we need to stop obsessing over the scales. The scale no longer
needs to be something we see more than our old school friends, or something
that dictates how we feel in a day.We are so much bigger than this. No one cares what the number on that scale says, so long as we are HEALTHY!

My aim is to one day throw my scales away. I want to get to a point where I can listen to hunger signals, and eat intuitively, and let that regulate my weight naturally. Since I started working away from home I have not had scales available to me everyday (although I originally did consider lugging one with me!) And you know what? It's helped me to realise life is possible without knowing your weight everyday (although it was definitely strange for the first few weeks going about my business not knowing my weight that day). Yes, I still feel a larger sense of apprehension when I come
to weighing myself when I get back after being away (it’s often the first thing I go and do),
but overall I do feel like I have more freedom from the scales.
I'm going to practice more of the positive thinking I've shown in this post, and hopefully with the help of a therapist I will eventually get to the point where I throw that scale away. Are you ready to throw away yours too?
Have you ever given up the scales? What's your view on weighing yourself daily?
Hope you all have wonderful days.
